Mattress and furniture biohazard removal

Assessment, removal and proper disposal of mattresses, box springs, upholstered furniture and recliners contaminated with blood, bodily fluids, decomposition or heavy waste.

What this involves

Mattresses, couches and recliners are built from layers of fabric, foam and batting that absorb fluids quickly and hold them deep inside. A stain on the cover usually means the foam beneath is also saturated. Recliners and sleeper sofas hide contamination in mechanisms and frames. These are often the items closest to where a person was ill, injured or died, and the ones most likely to hold odor. In rentals, hotels and care settings, they can also be the items most often reused when they should not be. In assisted living, group homes and rentals, furniture is sometimes reused between residents or tenants. After a biohazard incident, that is usually not a safe choice for upholstered pieces.

Why professional remediation matters

There is no practical way to fully decontaminate foam and batting soaked with blood or bodily fluids. Surface cleaning or an enzyme treatment can remove a stain and reduce odor for a while, but contamination and odor typically remain inside. For that reason, saturated mattresses and upholstered furniture are generally removed and disposed of, not cleaned. Some solid wood or metal frames and hard components can be cleaned and kept. Removal itself takes care: wrapping items before they are carried through a home avoids leaving contamination along the way. Disposal is also not as simple as putting an item on the curb. Many haulers and landfills will not accept furniture visibly contaminated with bodily fluids, and wrapping and labeling matter for the people who handle it after it leaves the property.

What to avoid before help arrives

  • Do not try to clean a mattress or couch that has absorbed blood, bodily fluids or decomposition; it holds contamination deep inside.
  • Do not put a contaminated mattress on the curb or in a dumpster without wrapping it.
  • Do not donate, sell or give away furniture that was involved in a biohazard incident.
  • If a piece has sentimental value, ask about cleaning hard parts or saving fabric, cushions or keepsakes before it is discarded.

How the work is done

  1. Assessment. We inspect the item and tell you whether any part can be cleaned or should be removed.
  2. Salvage. Personal items found in or under furniture, and hard components you want to keep, are set aside and cleaned where possible.
  3. Wrapping. Contaminated items are wrapped and sealed before being carried out, to avoid spreading contamination.
  4. Removal. Items are removed from the property along a protected path.
  5. Area cleaning. The floor and walls where the item sat are cleaned and checked, since fluids often reach beneath it.

Waste handling

Furniture saturated with blood or other potentially infectious materials is handled as regulated medical waste, which may mean breaking it down for packaging. Items with lighter contamination may qualify for ordinary disposal after wrapping.

Afterward

Replacing a mattress or furniture after a biohazard incident may be part of an insurance claim. Photograph items before removal and keep documentation. If you replace a mattress in a care setting or rental, a waterproof, fluid-resistant cover makes future incidents easier to manage.

Questions

Can a mattress be cleaned after someone died on it?

In nearly all cases, no. Fluids soak into the foam and batting, which cannot be fully decontaminated. Removal is the safe choice.

Can you remove just one piece of furniture?

Often yes. Ask when you call; it depends on what happened and what else in the room is affected.
