Biohazard cleanup in Sparta, Tennessee

Cleanup in Sparta: what shapes the work

White County is cave country, with more than 1,200 documented caves, including Blue Spring Cave about five miles northeast of town. In limestone terrain like this, surface water can reach groundwater quickly, so on rural properties with private wells or septic systems, wash water from a cleanup is collected and disposed of rather than sent down drains or onto the ground.

East of town the county climbs onto the plateau, where Virgin Falls in Scott's Gulf and Rock Island State Park on the Caney Fork draw visitors. Cabins and homes in that terrain can sit at the end of steep or unpaved roads, which affects how equipment and waste containers reach the site.

Before help arrives

1. If someone is hurt or has died, call 911 first. Inside city limits the Sparta Police Department responds; outside them, the White County Sheriff's Office.
2. Do not clean anything yet. Wait until the scene is released, and avoid household cleaners on blood or fluids.
3. Close off the area. Shut the door, keep children and pets out, and turn off fans blowing toward the room.
4. Write down the case or report number and the agency name. Your insurer and the property owner may need it.
5. Call us when you are ready. We will explain what is involved before anything is agreed.
