Rules that apply in Raleigh

Who investigates a death here

North Carolina uses a statewide medical examiner system run by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in the Division of Public Health (NCDHHS). The county medical examiner must be notified of deaths from violence, poisoning, accident, suicide or homicide, sudden or unattended deaths, deaths in custody, and suspicious or unnatural deaths (G.S. 130A-383).

Help paying for cleanup after a crime

Yes. The Office of Victim Compensation Services in the NC Department of Public Safety lists crime scene cleanup as an accepted expense. No separate cleanup cap is listed; total awards are up to $45,000 for victims of violent crime. The program is the payer of last resort, so insurance must be billed first.

Drug lab properties

G.S. 130A-284 requires owners and others in control of a property used to make meth to follow state decontamination rules (10A NCAC 41D). The SBI notifies the county health department, which tells the owner, reviews the assessment and plan, and keeps a county list. The rules do not require a state-certified contractor and do not require testing.
