Virginia uses a medical examiner system. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, with district offices, must be notified of deaths from trauma, violence, poisoning, accident, suicide or homicide, sudden deaths, deaths unattended by a physician, deaths in custody, and suspicious or unnatural deaths (Va. Code § 32.1-283).

Help paying for cleanup after a crime
Yes. The Virginia Victims Fund (VVF) may reimburse anyone who pays, or takes on the bill for, reasonable costs to clean a crime scene in a residence or vehicle, up to $1,000 in total. VVF is the payer of last resort and pays only after work is done. Providers may not send an account under VVF review to collections.

Drug lab properties
The State Board of Health sets guidelines for cleaning residential property used to make meth (Va. Code § 32.1-11.7). The Virginia Department of Health says the guidelines are voluntary and that it does not inspect properties. The statute does not require state-certified contractors. An owner who knows a home was a meth site and was not cleaned up must tell buyers in writing (§ 55.1-708).
